Council briefed on sanitation bid opening and route/financial studies as privatization debate continues

The administration is awaiting a draft financial study from Rea & Associates and a separate route reorganization study. The route study will examine options that could change some residents’ pickup days in order to reduce the number of collection routes and achieve operational efficiencies. The safety service director cautioned that the decision to privatize collection would require weighing service levels, capital costs for city-owned trucks and long-term personnel commitments: “I think you need to take a look at it more than just what the numbers are,” the director said.
Councilmembers said they want to review the draft financial and route studies before any decision about contracting out sanitation services. No procurement award was made at the meeting; bids were to be opened the day after the council session.
