Committee approves acceptance of 9.7‑acre Chestnut Ridge annexation

The Community Development Committee voted Sept. 8 to recommend acceptance of an annexation transferring roughly 9.7093 acres on Chestnut Ridge Road from Carlisle Township and Eaton Township into the City of Elyria. Law Director Dery explained the statutory process: after county commissioners approve an annexation, there is a 60‑day waiting period during which the city cannot act; that period has lapsed and the annexation is now before council for final acceptance. Attorney John Clark, representing the developer Love Retail, confirmed the county commissioners approved the annexation June 17 and that the council’s referral was procedural to enable formal acceptance at the next meeting. Third‑Ward Councilmember Suwerka said she has received complaints about the property’s condition while in limbo and said she hoped the owners would not develop it for commercial subdivision uses that could worsen traffic; she said she did not expect the city to block the annexation but raised concerns about future land use and traffic. The committee read the legal parcel numbers on the record and voted to draw legislation authorizing the mayor to accept the annexation. The motion was moved by Mr. Oswald, seconded by Mrs. Mitchell and carried by voice vote.
