Lorain commission approves replacement wall sign at 621 Broadway; corrects January minutes to add Andrea Neal

Brett Smith, a representative of Direct Image Science, told the commission the proposal is a like-for-like replacement of an existing south-side wall sign at 621 Broadway. "What we're proposing to do is replace an existing wall sign that's on the south side of the wall. The new sign will be the same size and material, just an updated version of it with updated colors and some other information that's on there that's changed," Smith said.
The commission asked for a size confirmation; Smith and commissioners confirmed the replacement sign measures 4 feet by 5 feet (20 square feet). Commissioners also noted the updated sign includes a red color used on the building facade and an additional line of text identifying "Lorain County," and that the new layout includes a larger seal and a name line that was spoken as "Tom Orlando." A commissioner said earlier concerns about necessity and budget impact were resolved after the applicant's confirmation that the sign was the same size as the existing sign.
After discussion, a motion to approve the new signage was made and seconded; the commission approved the application by voice vote. The commission then referred the application and the certificate of appropriateness to the Lorain building department for the applicant to obtain the signed permit.
Separately, the commission approved a motion to correct the minutes of its January meeting by adding Andrea Neal as an attendee. That motion was made and seconded and approved by voice vote.
On other business, members discussed citywide "welcome to Lorain" signs. A member said the signs will be standardized in material and design and will be placed on main corridors and downtown. The speaker stated the State of the City would be held on Wednesday, Feb. 26, at the Lorain Palace Theater with doors opening at 8:30 a.m.; earlier in the exchange the same speaker said, "I believe it's February 24," then clarified the date. No funding, ordinance changes or further actions on the welcome signs were recorded at the meeting.
