Milton council designates assistant police chief as exempt position; ordinance adopted unanimously

MILTON, Wash. — The Milton City Council unanimously adopted Ordinance 2119-25 on Sept. 2, 2025, formally adding the assistant chief of police position as an exempt classification in Milton Municipal Code Chapter 2.32 concerning the civil service commission.
Chief Hernandez explained the ordinance is a housekeeping measure to reflect that the assistant chief position is exempt from civil service rules; he said the change simply acknowledges the department’s existing organizational structure. Council member Whelan said he supported the second reading and expected the change would benefit the department and staff.
The council approved the ordinance by voice vote (6-0). The motion to approve Ordinance 2119-25 was made by Council member Whelan and seconded by Council member Strader.
