The mayor reminded residents that the city council meeting will be held tonight in council chambers at 7 p.m. and said attendance may be larger than usual; city staff will enforce fire-code occupancy for the space. The mayor also announced the Board of Zoning Appeals will meet Sept. 9 at 7 p.m. in council chambers. The mayor said the Shade Tree Commission will meet in September at 6 p.m. in council chambers but did not provide a specific date for that meeting. The mayor issued three proclamations: the week of Sept. 15 as Adult Literacy Week in Athens, the month of September as National Prostate Cancer Awareness Month and as Hispanic Latin Heritage Month. The mayor encouraged residents, schools, businesses and community groups to observe those recognitions through programming and events.
