DeKalb County committee recommends six firms are compliant with tax abatements; members debrief scheduling scramble

Members of the DeKalb County Tax Abatement Committee voted to recommend to the full county council that Auburn Renewables, Magic Coil Products, Paragon Steel, Country Heritage, IGDB Biogas and Technoblock with Midwest Corporation be recorded as in compliance with their tax abatements.
The recommendation came after committee members summarized recent site visits and discussed scheduling challenges tied to a May 15 paperwork deadline that limits when visits can be completed and formally considered by the council.
Committee members said most of the companies had turned in required paperwork late this year, compressing the window for visits. "We could call them all on May 1 and schedule everything for after May 15," said Member 2, a committee member, describing a proposed approach to avoid next year’s last-minute scramble. Members agreed the visits cannot be finalized until the assessor’s and auditor’s offices process the companies’ filings.
The committee discussed two firms — Technoblock and Magic Coil — for which this meeting will be their last abatement review. Members noted two other filings had been turned in on or near the May 15 deadline, limiting the time available for inspections and review before the committee’s recommendation to the full council.
Member 2 also reported on a visit summary relayed from another committee member: "He was rather impressed," Member 2 said of the visits, specifically noting interest in IGDB Biogas’s operations. Committee members described IGDB Biogas as a recently commissioned biogas facility — "they’ve really only been up and running for a short time" — and praised the project’s renewable-energy approach to farm byproducts.
The committee made a formal motion to recommend to the full council that the six named firms be found in compliance; Member 3 moved the recommendation and Member 2 seconded. Members signaled their support verbally and the chair declared the motion carried. The committee also approved minutes from its March 31 meeting and then adjourned.
Committee members asked staff to reduce next year’s scheduling pressure by contacting firms earlier and penciling in site visits for the period after the May 15 filing deadline so inspections and staff reviews can be completed before the next full-council meeting.
