Central Police report: July calls show overdose uptick and 95 crashes

The Central Police Department reported July activity to the Central City Council on Aug. 26, noting an increase in overdoses during the month and recording 95 vehicle crashes.
Chief-level staff (reporting statistics) said July numbers included 1,911 911 hang-ups, 431 business checks and neighborhood patrol entries, one narcotics arrest, eight overdoses, 364 calls for service logged in a summarized report and 100 traffic stops that resulted in 48 citations. The department logged 894 total CAD entries for the month; not every CAD entry produced a file number.
A council member observed an uptick in overdoses; a police representative said: “It you can tell, when the bad batches come out because you see more overdoses, and then you'll see fewer.” The department said some DWIs were crash-related and that one DWI involved private-property damage; staff could not confirm the other two in that exchange.
Council members asked for clarification on the DWIs and other categories; staff provided the limited details available in incident summaries and said more complete records remain with the department’s case files.
No new law-enforcement policies, hires or disciplinary actions were adopted during the report. The council later approved provisional hires for two public-safety positions (see separate agenda action).
