Commissioners approve first reading to update county code after June transient room tax increase

Weber County commissioners on Aug. 26 approved the first reading of an ordinance to amend county code language to reflect an earlier increase in the transient room tax rate.
Cortland Erickson, county counsel, told the board, “In June, as you recall, you adopted an ordinance that increased the transient room tax from 4.25 to 4.5%. At that time, when that ordinance was adopted, we inadvertently did not put any specific language in there updating the county code to reflect that change. The county code has the rate, listed in it. So this is a cleanup ordinance just to make it very clear that that county code should be updated to reflect the change that was made.”
Erickson described the item as a cleanup to align the codified county ordinance text with the ordinance the commission adopted in June. Commissioners treated the matter as a first reading and recorded a motion to approve; the board then voted in favor of moving forward with the ordinance’s first reading.
No public comment or competing proposals were recorded during the item. Commissioners and staff indicated the amendment is intended solely to reflect the policy the board already adopted earlier in June and to prevent inconsistency between the codified county code and the previously adopted ordinance.
