Commission approves airport car-and-plane show with insurance, advisory-board conditions

The Morgan County Commission on Sept. 2 approved a community fundraiser — described as a combined car-and-plane show at the Morgan County Airport — subject to proof of insurance, airport advisory-board endorsement and other safety conditions.
Luke Majewski, a Mountain Green resident, proposed the event to raise funds for both the Mountain Green Volunteer Fire Department and the Morgan County Airport. He described a plan for 50–70 curated vehicles, 10–15 volunteers for parking and safety, spectator fees, vendor food trucks and aircraft displays; he estimated 200–300 attendees for a tentative Oct. 3 date.
County conditions County staff and the county attorney reviewed the airport code (section 154.133) and advised that any commercial activity on airport property must comply with federal, state and county laws; organizers must document records, maintain public-liability insurance that names Morgan County as an additional insured, and follow county permitting and business-license rules. The county attorney said: "Maintenance of public liability insurance of the type and amount considered and approved by the county commission" is required under the county code and recommended insurance limits consistent with other county rentals.
Commission action Commissioner Newton moved approval with conditions; Commissioner Blocker seconded. The motion passed unanimously. The approval included the airport advisory-board recommendation already received and required the organizer to deliver the required insurance certificate and to comply with county permitting, vendor licensing and public-safety planning before the event.
Why it matters County staff emphasized the need to protect public safety on and near the airport: the organizers must provide a plan for parking, sheriff or deputy staffing for traffic control as needed, and measures to keep spectators off runway surfaces. The county attorney advised that the organizer should set transparent rules for vehicle eligibility so private decisions are not arbitrary and to keep records of registrations and revenues for any county fee-sharing arrangement.
Ending Organizers and staff agreed to return to the commission with finalized insurance and logistics materials; the commission’s approval is conditional on meeting those requirements.
