Northwest ISD board authorizes complaint to state over teacher’s resignation

The Northwest ISD Board of Trustees voted to find that a teacher, identified in board materials as Gabriel Berumen, resigned without good cause and authorized the superintendent to file a complaint with the State Board for Educator Certification seeking sanctions for abandonment of his contract.

The motion, offered by board member Mr. Suter, said in full, “I move that the board finds that good cause did not exist under Section 21.21 C of the Texas Education Code for Gabriel Grama to resign his contract for the 2024–2025 school year, that the board did not consent to his resignation, that the board authorizes the superintendent to file a complaint with the State Board of Educators Certification to seek sanctions for his abandonment.” The motion was seconded by Mrs. Murphy and the board voted in favor.

The board’s action invokes Texas Education Code §21.21(c), which governs the conditions under which a district may deem a teacher’s resignation to be without good cause and pursue certification consequences. The board did not discuss alternate remedies in detail during the public portion of the meeting; staff presented the recommendation that the resignation lacked good cause and requested authorization to file a complaint.

Board members asked no recorded follow-up questions on the record about conditions that led to the resignation. The board’s action was limited to the finding described above and giving the superintendent authority to file the complaint; no other discipline or employment action was announced at the meeting.

The board’s formal motion and vote are the action recorded; any additional investigatory steps or eventual findings by the State Board for Educator Certification would occur outside the district’s meeting record and were not described in detail during the session.
