Prince Edward County staff asked the Board of Supervisors to adopt a resolution authorizing submission of a Tobacco Commission Southern Virginia Program grant application for $74,800 to fund phase two of the county’s wayfinding signage project.
The county’s economic development staff explained that phase two would include fabrication and installation of eight trailblazer signs and gateway signage to direct motorists to local destinations such as Hampden‑Sydney College, Sandy River Reservoir, Briery Creek Lake and the Manor Golf Club. Staff said a dollar‑for‑dollar local match is required and recommended drawing the match from the county’s transient‑occupancy tax revenue for hotels.
Staff noted that the total estimated project cost is $177,100, that the county previously received a $27,500 tourism grant for phase one and that the Commonwealth Regional Council would assist with grant administration. Two vendor quotes were attached to the staff report; staff said the project must be formally bid when procurement begins.
A supervisor moved to adopt the proposed resolution to allow the grant application; the motion carried. The board directed staff to complete the application and to proceed with procurement procedures once the grant decision and funding were confirmed.
No substantive amendments to the project scope or match source were made at the meeting.
