The Planning Commission voted to approve a front-yard fence at 302 West Beacon Avenue after the property owner described the need to secure animals and children on a corner lot. The owner said the parcel “doesn't have a lot of side or rear yard, so they wanted to be able to fence that area and corral a couple dogs and some of their children.”
Commissioners discussed whether the lot should be treated as having two front yards; one commissioner said, “technically, it's got 2 front yards.” The zoning administrator told the commission the city is revising its zoning code and that many routine requests could be handled administratively once the new ordinance is adopted. “We're working on it,” the zoning administrator said when asked about shifting such approvals out of the commission's agenda.
The motion to approve the fence passed with an oral vote. Commissioners did not place additional special conditions beyond the standard code checks; the record shows the commission approved the request during the meeting.
The commission also noted the forthcoming zoning update could change front-yard and fence standards (including a change in allowable fence height cited in the discussion) and reduce the number of items requiring commission review. Staff said the new ordinance will consider questions such as whether a gate is required for fire access and will set the parameters for administrative approvals.
