Council tables Florida Climate Week proclamation and asks for formal proclamations policy discussion

The Oldsmar City Council voted to table a proclamation request from the Volo Foundation to recognize October 2025 as Florida Climate Week after an extended council discussion about transparency and the city’s process for approving proclamations.

Councilmember Tadazewski made the motion to table and then explained he had reviewed meeting materials and city practice and wanted more clarity on how proclamations are vetted. “My concern with proclamations revolves around transparency, making sure that public understands why we're doing things,” Tadazewski said. He asked that the council add a discussion of the city’s proclamation process and policy to a future tentative agenda so the council could establish consistent criteria for requests.

The mayor and other members clarified that a motion to table means the item will not return to the agenda unless a councilmember requests it be placed back. Tadazewski said he was not opposed to the proclamation itself but preferred to have written criteria for evaluating requests, including whether a requester lives in Oldsmar or whether a council member sponsors the request.

A motion to table the Volo Foundation request was called, seconded and approved by voice vote; the chair announced the motion passed. No final determination on the substance of the proclamation was made at the meeting.

Councilmembers asked staff and colleagues to consider adding a dedicated policy discussion to a future meeting agenda (Tadazewski suggested October), and staff said the matter will be placed on the agenda only if a councilmember requests it to return.
