Residents ask Harper Woods to repair sidewalks, improve ADA access and address traffic and sewer concerns

Multiple residents spoke during Call to the Audience May 5 about neighborhood maintenance and safety issues, asking the city to respond to sidewalk damage, ADA access needs, traffic enforcement and sewer-inspection footage.

Margaret Nelson (20405 Fleetwood) described a damaged sidewalk that she said had caused a fall; she told council crews had broken her sprinkler head during repair work and that she had not received timely follow-up after emailing the Department of Public Works. Nelson asked how the city selects sidewalks for repair and suggested the city notify homeowners when it is their responsibility to maintain sidewalk sections.

Jacqueline Loverns (20473 Buffet) raised several concerns including wheelchair access to the meeting venue and closed captioning for people who are hard of hearing. She said a manhole near her property is sinking and reported lost sewer-camera footage from prior inspections. Loverns also described repeated drivers failing to stop at local stop signs and urged enforcement; she said she filed police reports after observed indecent exposure by a crew member and wanted tickets and stronger enforcement.

Tony Wagner (resident) spoke about a separate, national news item and noted details about a Milwaukee court incident discussed elsewhere; he also relayed a community message about a local scout troop flower sale.

Public works staff Heather asked Nelson to speak with her after the meeting to follow up. Council members and staff acknowledged the complaints and directed staff to follow up with residents for specific investigations and repairs.
