Planning Commission Accepts Annual Report; Staff Notes Engagement Award and Local Business News

The Planning Commission unanimously accepted the City of Berkley Community Development Department’s annual report at its Aug. 26 meeting. Staff summarized department activities and noted the report also supports the city’s Redevelopment Ready Communities requirements. Kristen told commissioners the department and staff won a public engagement award from the Michigan Association of Planning for outreach related to the new zoning ordinance. She said the recognition reflects expanded public engagement during the ordinance rewrite. In communications, staff reported that a new restaurant, Buns and Patties, is planned for the former Tubby’s location; staff said the applicant has applied for a business license and that storefront landscaping work had been underway. Commissioners asked whether the restaurant would serve lunch for students; staff said hours were not yet confirmed. Commissioners also discussed training needs tied to Redevelopment Ready Communities certification. They suggested short sessions on special-land-use decision-making, motion-making that documents findings, and parliamentary procedure that could be offered jointly with City Council or the Zoning Board of Appeals; staff said it will coordinate training dates and formats. The commission’s acceptance of the annual report was by motion and unanimous vote; staff will file the report per statutory and certification requirements.
