City Council authorized the city manager to sign the Purdue opioid-settlement participation form on Sept. 8 (motion M8525) so Berkeley can participate in nationwide settlements resolving litigation against Purdue and other defendants.
City staff said the nationwide settlement totals approximately $7.4 billion; Michigan’s potential allocation is up to $154 million over 15 years, with the actual share depending in part on participation by local governments. The participation form must be executed by Sept. 30 for the city to be included in the distribution calculation, staff said.
City Attorney (present) reviewed the form and staff recommended authorizing the manager to sign. Assistant/Dan Ivecu clarified that the settlement materials include multiple defendants (Purdue, retail chains and manufacturers) with differing percentage allocations in the exhibits. Council voted to authorize the manager to sign the participation form; no dollar amount was guaranteed to the city and distribution will depend on final allocations and participation levels.
