One member summarized the view from the contractor: "they would cut it in half and... put it in as if it was going to be over... a structure that you could probably drive your car over necessarily, but it would be secure." Members discussed that culverts might be a lower-cost alternative and asked staff to gather comparative prices.
Trail maintenance budget and recent spending: The committee reported that from April 1 to July 31 it spent $11,673.53 on signs, small removals and related open-space expenses. Members approved an additional $8,750 to TNT (contractor) for removal of hazardous trees and clearing overgrown sections in Meridian Woods and Ferry Gauge Trail. The committee had previously approved up to $5,000 to place gravel and wood chips on the Parkway–Macomb trail to improve surfacing.
Eagle Scout kayak launch: The committee deferred formal approval of an Eagle Scout project to relocate a floating kayak launch pending permitting, ADA-pathway questions and feasibility of installation/removal. Township staff and the recreation director noted the dock is a floating (not permanent) structure and said the scout must complete required scouting paperwork and secure permits; ADA accessibility of any associated approach must meet standards. Members discussed possible alternative launch sites, including township-owned land near the bridge parking area, and whether contractors with barges (e.g., local marine contractors) could move the dock.
Decisions and next steps: No procurement decision was finalized. Staff will obtain comparative bids or cost estimates for culverts vs. boardwalk installation, coordinate backfill/grading responsibilities, provide documentation of recent TNT work, and confirm permitting requirements for the Eagle Scout kayak launch (including ADA path standards and any waterway signage needs). The committee also asked staff to include a monthly financial report on future agendas.
Ending: Members emphasized balancing volunteer labor with contractor work, confirmed outreach via the township newsletter, and agreed to schedule follow-up items (cost comparisons, permit checklist, and site inspections) for the next meeting.
