Township trustee urges clarity on procurement and support for staff in liaison update

At the Grosse Ile Fire Commission meeting, Trustee Mickey gave a liaison update on recent township board discussion about procurement policies and the board’s relationship with township managers.

Mickey said the township board debated how to handle purchases ranging from consulting services to physical repairs at Centennial Farms, noting some disagreement among trustees about procurement thresholds. “What we wanna do is make sure that we're able to act quick enough to meet the township's needs, but also be fiscally responsible,” she said.

Mickey stressed that trustees have fiduciary duties and are one of seven on the board, and she urged that managers be treated with respect when presenting requests. “I just wanna make sure that they don't feel like they're being drilled … we're there to support them,” she said. She clarified the limits of trustee authority: “The managers, the township staff, they do not report to us. We are a board and our only authority comes through board votes.”

Mickey said she will serve as a liaison to provide background to the fire commission and to help managers prepare for board presentation of large expenses, and that the township will meet minimum state bidding requirements while aiming not to unduly slow operations.
