Council approves purchases for public-safety fleet and hose-handling equipment

Escanaba City Council on Aug. 7 approved two public-safety purchases previously budgeted: a 2025 Chevrolet Tahoe for the Escanaba Public Safety Department at a purchase price of $54,549, and a battery-powered power roller with the “Go Pack” option to roll and transport large-diameter fire hose, at approximately $9,870 (including attachments).
Staff said the Tahoe represented the lowest of three quotes and could be delivered quickly. Councilors asked whether additional budget would be needed to outfit the vehicle; staff said electronics and mounting were budgeted. The vehicle will be fully marked with overhead emergency lights so it will be readily identifiable to the public.
Fire-department staff described how the power roller (used by other nearby departments) reduces strenuous manual handling of large-diameter hose (5-inch LDH), helps expel water while rolling and can significantly reduce manpower and overtime required after large incidents. The quoted unit can roll up to 5,000 feet of hose on a charge; the Go Pack (collapsible dolly-style cart) was recommended to increase efficiency during loading.
Council approved both purchases by roll call; staff said funding for both items was included in the approved budget.
