Committee seeks bids for sidewalk project after engineers estimate exceeds budget

City staff presented a sidewalk improvement project proposal for 2025 at the Committee of the Whole meeting on Aug. 12 and the committee agreed to place the project on the regular council agenda for bidding and final authorization.
Walt Landers, a city staff presenter, described the project scope: selected sidewalk blocks for replacement, curb and driveway work, and photographs highlighting target locations. Landers said the engineer's estimate for the work was about $307,875, while staff reported $300,000 had been budgeted for the project.
Council members asked about the $7,875 gap between the estimate and the budget. Staff said the city had appropriation funds that could cover a small overage, and that the council would address any larger variance if bids came in above the estimate. Alderman Parrot and other members asked questions about specific streets that had been targeted and whether individual property owners affected by stoop or landing changes had been re-contacted; staff said they would follow up with affected residents.
The committee agreed to place the sidewalk project on the regular agenda and to proceed with bidding. No final contract award or appropriation decision was made at the committee meeting; staff will return to council with bid results and recommended award and funding adjustments if needed.
The project presentation and packet included photographs of target locations and the engineer's estimate; staff asked the committee to approve the targets and allow staff to solicit bids.
