Santa Paula opens sports park, expands youth and senior programs; parks director details summer schedule

Parks & Recreation reported the new Santa Paula Creek Sports Park was turned over to the city, pavilions are renting well, and summer programming — including July 4 activities, movie nights and a small concert series — is planned; staff presented participation numbers for youth, senior nutrition, and recreation classes.
Director Barnes told the council that the Santa Paula Creek Sports Park was officially turned over to the city during the reporting period and that barbecue pavilions and sports fields are available for rental and frequent use. “We opened up the barbecue pavilions for rental, and the and the sports fields are now available. We are seeing high volume of those barbecue pavilions being rented,” Barnes said.
Barnes reviewed January–April department activity: expanded youth programming (archery, taekwondo, gymnastics), 610 basketball participants, a school‑league season of about 560 participants, and 79 unique youth using the youth center. He reported the YARA program completed a cohort of 13 graduates — which Barnes said is notable — and that the program plans a third cohort starting in late July.
Senior services reported 268 participants in center programs and 1,383 congregate and 1,136 home‑delivered meals during the reporting period; staff said meals frequency could change pending county funding. Parks maintenance completed turf work at Las Piedras Park, installed 11 AEDs citywide, and finished many work orders; staff reported 1,855 work orders issued and 1,802 completed during the period.
Barnes also summarized planned summer activities: movie nights (June 13, July 11, Aug. 15), a small summer concert series at the sports park (June 20, July 18, Aug. 22), and a July 4 fireworks and family‑activity program at the sports park beginning in the afternoon. Staff welcomed questions and said the department would continue outreach for volunteers and partnerships, including support for the city’s time‑capsule event on June 16.
