The Village of Homer Glen board on Aug. 14 approved an ordinance amending Chapter 83.74(g) of the village code to permit limited entertainment upon premises licensed to sell alcoholic beverages subject to village review and issuance of a special event permit.
Trustee Reinders, who supported the change, said the measure is not targeted at any single business and is intended to bring such events under village oversight. “I think everybody’s under the misconception that we are targeting Bankston’s; this is not the case,” Reinders said, adding the permit process would notify public safety and staff so events can be coordinated.
Trustee LaPorte dissented on principle, saying he preferred fewer regulations on businesses. “I’m not a fan of government interference with business,” LaPorte said.
Village Attorney addressed public concerns that the amendment might legalize lewd or indecent conduct. “The limited exception… will not allow for [indecent conduct] in this village,” the attorney said, clarifying the amendment’s scope.
Trustees voted to approve the ordinance by roll call. Proponents said the change provides a consistent permitting framework to ensure police, fire and village departments are notified and can review safety plans; opponents warned against over‑regulation.
What happens next: Businesses planning live music or other entertainment while selling alcohol will need to apply for a special event permit so the village can review impacts and coordinate public‑safety resources.
