Homer Glen board approves municipal grocery tax implementation to retain local sales revenue

The Village of Homer Glen board on Aug. 14 approved an ordinance implementing both a municipal grocery retailer’s occupation tax and a municipal grocery services occupation tax, a move trustees said preserves roughly $875,585 in annual local revenue.
Trustee LaPorte, summarizing the ordinance, said the measure is not a new tax but a change in how existing purchases are collected and remitted. “This is not a new tax. This is just a new method of collecting the same tax that’s been paid,” Trustee LaPorte said.
Several trustees said the revenue supports village operations, including infrastructure and services that residents use. Trustee Mason said the board must notify the state by October or risk losing the village’s share of the grocery tax revenue. “If we don’t notify the state by October, come January, we don’t get this,” Mason said.
Mr. Sawyers, a village staff member who addressed the board, told trustees that grocery costs would not rise because of the change. “Grocery costs will not go up, due to this change,” Mr. Sawyers said, and he framed the grocery tax proceeds as an important part of the village’s sales‑tax funding for operations.
Trustees voted by roll call to approve the ordinance; the motion carried with all present trustees voting aye.
