Brentwood police informed aldermen on May 28 that several staffing changes and equipment upgrades are complete or in progress, and that the department is pursuing training grant funding.
The city administrator approved promotions earlier in the day, the chief told the committee: Joe Sullivan was promoted from lieutenant to major; Todd Lambert from sergeant to lieutenant; Emmon Figgs to sergeant from corporal; and Darren Johnson to corporal. The department also reported two current job openings and said one candidate was near an offer.
Equipment updates included arrival of an electric vehicle purchased with asset forfeiture funds. "It's parked in front of the building," the chief said; he described the vehicle as a smaller SUV with about a 280‑mile range at 80 percent charge and said the department will evaluate its range once full equipment is installed. The department also used asset forfeiture funds to upgrade handguns to models with red‑dot sights, which the chief said studies show can increase accuracy in stress shooting situations; supervisors will perform regular checks and certification on the new weapons.
The body‑worn camera program transition is complete, and the department described new automatic activation features. The chief said the system can activate on several indicators, including an officer's elevated heart rate or removal of a weapon from a holster; holster sensors were expected to be installed in the next 30 days so that drawing a weapon automatically starts recording.
The department noted it remains engaged in the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA) reporting and certification process, which requires ongoing annual reporting and in‑person reaccreditation every two years. Police also said they will apply for a Blue Shield training grant when state grants open in July and hope to secure a portion of a stated $10 million pool for officer safety training.
Aldermen asked about maintenance and calibration of red‑dot sights; the chief said supervisors certified in the systems will perform regular checks during roll call routines. The committee received the update as informational; no budget changes or votes were taken at the meeting.
