Boonville — The City Council voted May 5 to approve a mutual-aid agreement with the City of Columbia to formalize cooperative firefighting assistance.
The resolution (R2025-10) approves an agreement the council packet described as setting mutual-aid terms between Columbia and Booneville. City staff said the practical effect is to formalize assistance that already occurs informally when departments are called to large incidents.
Chief Cooper told the council mutual aid has been common practice for decades but that written mutual-aid agreements are important for how insurers and rating organizations evaluate department capacity. “Any of these departments will come if you call them,” he said, and added the agreement carries no planned direct financial obligation for Booneville beyond potential property-damage costs on joint responses.
Council members moved and seconded the resolution; the council approved it by roll call. Staff noted a wording correction will be made to the draft to fix a copy-paste error in the introductory “whereas” clause before final signature.
City officials said the agreement is intended primarily to improve firefighting effectiveness, minimize damage to structures and protect life by clarifying expectations and response coordination between the two cities.
