The Hobbs City Commission unanimously approved Resolution No. 7663 authorizing the mayor to execute a $2.5 million Department of Transportation rural air service enhancement grant supporting JSX charter service to and from Hobbs. The agreement covers a two‑year term and requires a 10% city match, Todd Randall, assistant city manager, told the commission.
Jennifer Grama of the Economic Development Corporation of Lee County, who prepared the grant application, said the funding reduces the startup risk for the new carrier and allows an expansion of JSX service from three to four days per week. “Starting Sept. 24, we will begin a Wednesday service,” Grama told commissioners, adding that the expanded schedule will operate Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday to better serve business travelers.
Grama and commissioners said fares for round trips remain competitive with alternatives; Grama cited a recent weekend example with a round‑trip JSX fare near $400 and comparable Southwest and United fares in the same range. Commissioners who had taken the inaugural JSX flight praised its convenience and onboard amenities; Commissioner Mills noted shorter total travel time compared with driving to another airport and a promotional 20% discount code available for bookings made through Aug. 31.
The resolution passed by voice vote; Commissioners and staff thanked Lee County and local partners for their cooperation. The grant is for a two‑year pilot period intended to increase schedule inventory and better serve air travel needs in Hobbs.
