The Ways and Means Committee voted to accept a settlement offer of $623.40 on May 7 to resolve billing for a November 2023 ambulance transport, staff said.
Chief Kaptural described the call: the ambulance responded to a vehicle accident on Highway 170 and transported a nonresident patient to Barnes Hospital. The patient later became involved in personal-injury litigation, and Brown and Brown's representative negotiated on the patient's behalf.
Chief Kaptural said the insurer’s representative offered “essentially two thirds of the bill” and added, “That is probably the highest percentage we've ever received for a settlement offer. Usually, it hovers right around 50%.” He said staff reviewed the bill and that the proposed amount met the applicable state statute.
A motion to accept the settlement for $623.40 was moved and seconded and passed on a voice vote; the transcript records the ayes carrying the motion. Staff noted the amount is higher than typical recoveries for similar settlements.
Committee members had no further questions on the matter.
