Commission approves $177,240.72 contract to replace Clinton Park playground at Hobbs Public Library

The Hobbs City Commission voted unanimously Feb. 18 to approve a CES contract with Exerplay for $177,240.72 to replace the playground at Clinton Park adjacent to the Hobbs Public Library.
Parks and Open Spaces Director Bridal Wagner told commissioners the existing playground is more than 15 years old, has parts that are no longer available and cannot be safely maintained. The proposed replacement will feature a library-themed design, swings (a frequently requested feature), and rubberized surfacing intended to improve full ADA accessibility compared with the park's current wood-chip ground cover. Wagner said the rubberized surfacing would permit easier wheelchair and walker access.
Approval and vote: Commissioner Fields moved to approve the contract; Commissioner Girth seconded. Commissioners Smith, Mills, Fields, Calderon, Penick, Girth and Mayor Cobb all voted yes. The director said additional benches and trash cans will be added around the new playground.
Why it matters: The project replaces aging equipment that staff said is no longer repairable and lowers the city's liability risk from failing parts. The change also adds an ADA-compliant surface that city staff said will allow children using mobility devices to access play features.
