At the June 12 Public Works Committee meeting, the department reported progress and planned work on a series of neighborhood repairs and traffic changes.
Public Works Director Dan said the leaning retaining wall between two properties at 2832 Manderley Drive remains unresolved because the city needs permission from both owners; the city attorney has contacted the owners but staff said the property owners are seeking compensation greater than a nominal payment and the matter is at a stalemate.
Dan reported crews replaced and stained a wooden staircase on the east side of Swim Club Lane north of Rosalie and that Parks staff trimmed vegetation in the area. He also described a planned striping project on Brasu Avenue: crews will install 15 thermoplastic parking stalls measuring 23 feet by 8 feet each, and one stall will be reserved for Brentwood Park staff. A committee member said the newly marked stalls appear full and have improved parking alignment.
On Yulele Avenue (a concrete street), staff have been cutting out and replacing failed joints and paving over them with asphalt to maintain a smoother driving surface; Dan said several commercial slabs in the Hanley Industrial area will likely need full replacement and are being considered in the 2026 budget.
Dan updated the committee on a winter truck fire (truck 53). Staff received an insurance check of about $41,000 for the damaged truck; the claim has a $15,000 deductible and finance has the check. Replacement of the vehicle had already been scheduled in the 2026 budget, Dan said.
Committee members also raised concerns about vegetation encroaching onto Strassner near Urban and asked staff to coordinate trimming; Dan said Parks may need to use hand tools in some tight spots and that he would notify Parks.
The committee received the updates without formal action and asked staff to follow up on owner permissions for the retaining wall, trimming along Strassner, and to return with budget impacts for slab replacements planned for 2026.
