Brentwood approves payroll-deduction option for officers buying decommissioned firearms

The Brentwood Police Department said on July 23 that officers may buy department-owned Walther firearms previously purchased with asset-forfeiture funds and that the city has approved a payroll-deduction payment option for those purchases.
Chief Spies: "The guns are gonna be about $475 each. The officers were given the choice what do they wanna purchase it or not?"
Chief Spies said some officers opted to buy older department weapons, others will return unpurchased weapons to the distributor, and the finance office, represented by Michelle Depew, set up a payroll-deduction option to let officers pay over time rather than an immediate lump sum. The chief said City Attorney Jim Hetlage reviewed the proposed process and “sent the message today: he's fine with the process.”
Why it matters: departments commonly allow purchase of decommissioned equipment by personnel; the committee was informed that the process is in place and legally reviewed and that roughly six weapons will be returned to the distributor while others are sold to officers.
