Speed counts near Brentwood High show low violation rate; city to expand ladder crosswalk markings at schools

Brentwood's Public Works Department reported Aug. 27 that traffic near Brentwood High School is not showing a major increase in volume or speeding since the school year began, and staff recommended expanding more-visible ladder-style crosswalk markings at school crossings.
Public Works Director Dan Mitsuyu said a data collector mounted at about 2627 High School Drive recorded roughly 1,100 vehicles per day, up slightly from about 1,000 without school in session. He reported a violator rate of about 4.5 percent — approximately 45 to 50 vehicles per day — and that over the seven-day sample the total vehicle count was 7,912 with 471 vehicles traveling 30 mph or faster.
Mitsuyu said staff piloted ladder-style longitudinal markings at one crosswalk on Litzinger Road at Bremerton and that the thermoplastic material used should last several years. “If you like that, we could try to do that at the other crosswalks around each school. We bought enough material to do that as time allows,” Mitsuyu said.
Staff also reported minor work: no-parking signs and curb painting on Pine Avenue, replacement of a decorative light on Strassner Drive and new pedestrian warning signs on Manchester Road (installed by city staff because MoDOT would have provided a galvanized pole instead of decorative signage).
Ending: Staff will prepare a weekly report of the traffic-count filters and an implementation plan to expand ladder crosswalk markings at schools; no new traffic regulations were adopted Aug. 27.
