The Brentwood Board of Aldermen approved a new comprehensive sign plan for 2001 South Hanley Road, adopting bill number 6573 as ordinance 5197 and repealing ordinance 4676 after a 7–0 roll-call vote.
The plan updates a 2015 sign package for the former Wallace Pencil Co. buildings and changes the site name from Hanley Plaza to Hanley Point. City and applicant representatives told the board the update will allow new tenants to install signage consistent across the campus.
Drew Clary, the applicant representative from Intellica, described the package as an update to the campus signage for the two-building development that includes the historic Wallace Pencil Company façade. Planning and Zoning recommended approval by a 7–1 vote; the lone dissent related to expanded tenant signage on the south building.
Board members discussed concerns that tenant signs could appear above tenant names that do not correspond to an actual door on that elevation. Whitney, city planning staff, said the comprehensive sign plan is the mechanism to request departures from the city code and noted that the adopted plan limits individual tenant signs to 20 square feet. She described the existing code as providing a minimum of 20 square feet for a tenant but allowing a calculation tied to tenant frontage; the new plan standardizes the 20-square-foot limit for this development.
Several aldermen praised retaining the historic Wallace Pencil Co. sign on the building as character-enhancing. At the meeting the board voted to hear both the first and second readings the same night at the applicant's request to expedite tenant signage installation; the board then perfected the bill and adopted the ordinance.
The ordinance record shows a 7–0 roll-call vote in favor. The planning commission record and the ordinance number were cited during the meeting as the governing references for the action. No public comments were recorded on the sign plan at the hearing.
