Maplewood staff report tornado mutual aid, trackable costs and $6.8 million pension distribution to LAGERS

At the May 27 Maplewood City Council meeting the City Manager reported on a series of administrative items following the May 16 tornado in the region and on retirement funding and community engagement initiatives.
City staff deployed rescue, police and public-works crews to assist neighboring Clayton and St. Louis during recovery; those mutual-aid operations ended the prior Friday. The City Manager said Maplewood will track costs incurred during mutual-aid deployments in case federal disaster assistance from FEMA is later authorized and cost reimbursements flow to the city.
On pensions, staff said the city will transfer approximately $6,800,000 to LAGERS (Local Government Employees Retirement System) as part of a planned distribution to reduce the unfunded liability tied to the city’s dissolved police and fire pension trust. Staff explained the funds were converted into government securities per state law and that distribution calculations were completed with actuarial assistance; the city is on a 30-year payoff schedule for the remaining liability.
Additional staff notes: the city launched a complaint/compliment portal for the police department integrated with evaluation and tracking software and the city manager reported participating in a five-city affordable-housing roundtable organized by Churches Together for Justice. Staff said they will share meeting information and invite elected officials to regional housing discussions. The city manager also said staff will make introductions between the regional housing group and Maplewood Next (a local organizers group).
Council members and the mayor thanked city staff and neighboring jurisdictions for the mutual-aid response and commended city employees for storm-recovery work.
