Maplewood council approves zoning changes to allow entertainment uses and amend single-family rules

The Maplewood City Council on May 27 approved two ordinances that change the city’s zoning code: Bill 62.80 to allow entertainment uses in a specified district, and Bill 62.81 to amend definitions and rules for family occupancy, conversions of single-family dwellings and related prohibitions. Both bills were approved by roll call and enacted as ordinances (60 74 and 60 75).
Council members recorded affirmative roll-call votes on each ordinance. Council discussion was brief and no amendments were proposed at the meeting.
Bill 62.80 amends Chapter 56, Article 2, Division 1 to allow entertainment uses within a particular district and adjusts the lists of permitted, conditional and prohibited uses. Bill 62.81 updates multiple definitions (including the definition of “family”), clarifies rules on conversion or change of use of single-family dwellings, prohibits multiple-family occupancy of single-family units, and adds a prohibition on blood banks in all districts as drafted.
City staff presented the measures as code cleanups and updates to align zoning with current development goals; no public objections were recorded during the hearing. Both ordinances passed by unanimous roll call votes and will take effect according to the city’s ordinance enactment rules.
The changes could affect future permit reviews and the city’s comprehensive plan implementation, and staff said they will provide any necessary guidance to applicants and neighbors as the updated code is applied.
