Oak Grove authorizes cooperative tax collection agreement with Lafayette County

The Oak Grove Board of Alderwomen approved an ordinance authorizing the mayor to sign a cooperative agreement with the Lafayette County Collector of Revenue to collect city taxes and special assessments for properties in Lafayette County.
City staff explained the agreement will allow the county to include Oak Grove’s city tax on the county tax bill for residents inside the city limits who pay taxes through Lafayette County, simplifying payment and reducing duplicate handling by city staff. Kim (city staff) said the arrangement would let residents issue a single payment to the county and the county will remit city collections monthly.
Kim said the county currently sends roughly 100 tax bills that affect about 50 homes in Lafayette County within Oak Grove city limits; moving collection to the county would eliminate separate mailing and processing by city staff for those accounts. She described the change as a resident benefit that streamlines taxes and should be roughly cost-neutral for the city when processing time and postage are considered.
The board moved and seconded Bill 2509 for first and second reading by title and then voted to adopt the ordinance; the city clerk recorded yes votes from Rachel Kilmer, Tracy Newcomer, Pam Pope, Sierra McMichael and Kelly Neto. Bill 2509 was adopted as Ordinance No. 2135.
The ordinance authorizes the mayor to execute the cooperative agreement and directs staff to coordinate with the Lafayette County Collector of Revenue on the details of monthly remittance and implementation.
