The Olivet City Council voted unanimously on July 8 to authorize the city manager to sign an agreement with Reliable Tree Services to remove 22 ash trees at multiple park locations for an amount not to exceed $21,150. Beverly Tucker Knight, parks and recreation director, told the council the action responds to an encroaching emerald ash borer infestation and is intended to prevent a larger crisis. "We are, in advance of getting into a crisis situation recommending removal of 22 ash trees," Tucker Knight said. The trees to be removed are at Stacy Worsen, Herbside Villa and Indian Meadows Park. Tucker Knight said the city plants trees regularly and will replace the removed ash trees; she noted the city plants a minimum of 200 trees per year and sometimes many more in smaller stock counts. Council member polling recorded unanimous support: Council member Lewis, Council member Pashon Hellman, Council member Solomanoff, Chairman Pro Tem Weil and Mayor Clark voted in favor. The motion authorized entering the agreement for removal and directed staff to proceed under the contract; staff said one ash tree at Worsen Park is being treated prophylactically because it is nearly a state‑measured champion tree.
