Council approves purchase of two replacement police vehicles not to exceed $89,000

The City of Olivet approved the purchase of two replacement police vehicles on Aug. 12, authorizing the city manager to enter an agreement with Bellman Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram for two Dodge Durangos not to exceed $89,000.
Police Chief Beth Andreski told the council the state contract purchasing process limits vendor choices and that departments have shifted among models in recent years. She said the Durango V8 has been the most reliable for the department’s patrol needs and noted that upfitting costs were not included in the motion because staff are determining which existing equipment can be transferred to new vehicles.
One of the replaced vehicles is expected to be transferred to another city department; the other is likely to be sold at public auction. Staff said the city typically uses online auction services such as Purple Wave or GovDeals to make retired vehicles available to the public.
Council members asked about reliability and reuse of equipment; staff responded they reuse light bars, computer mounts and partitions when possible to reduce costs. The motion passed unanimously.
