Green Team wins grant for recycling pilot; goats eyed to clear invasive brambles at Indian Meadows

The Green Team reported Aug. 20 that it won a grant to pilot specialized recycling containers at Stacy Park and that the department is planning a targeted goat grazing to clear brambles and poison ivy at Indian Meadows.
Staff said the grant is under $10,000 and will fund a small number (two or three) of specialized bottles-and-cans recycling containers for Stacy Park as a pilot to see whether compliance improves. Staff explained the containers are more costly than dual-stream bins and that the grant limits how many units the department can purchase.
Separately, staff discussed plans to use goats to remove heavy brush, brambles and poison ivy in Indian Meadows where the ground is wet and volunteers cannot safely work. Staff said contractors provide the goats for short multi-day deployments; the goats are contained with an electric fence, checked daily by the contractor, provided water and a salt lick, and used for approximately five days depending on the site. Staff noted the contractors will coordinate public notice and safety signage.
Ending: Staff said the recycling pilot and the goat deployment are planned at moderate cost and will be monitored; they will report results to the commission after each pilot activity.
