The commission received an update Aug. 20 on the city’s Urban Night Sky (dark-sky) efforts. Staff said Stacy Park holds an existing dark-sky certification and that the department is applying to extend Urban Night Sky recognition to other parks.
Staff described regular stargazing opportunities at Stacy Park, often organized in partnership with the St. Louis Astronomical Society, and said the program is expanding; a Dobson Fest (an event featuring Dobsonian telescopes) is planned for September. Staff noted weather reduced turnout this summer — several scheduled events were clouded out — but said more events are scheduled for fall and that the city will promote the activities in the fall newsletter and via social media.
Ending: Staff asked commissioners to help promote fall stargazing events; they noted an upcoming newsletter article about turning off lights during bird migration that ties into night-sky outreach.
