Greene County commissioners certify amounts and rates from budget commission, reserve ability to reduce inside millage

Greene County commissioners voted Sept. 4 to accept the amounts and rates determined by the county budget commission and authorized staff to certify the required tax levies to the county auditor. The board also discussed reserving its inside millage so the county could reduce levies later if needed.

The action formalizes the county's certification of levies that the budget commission set this year, a routine step for establishing tax rates. County finance staff told commissioners there is time to adjust inside millage later in the process, and that reserving the inside millage would prevent other jurisdictions from using it if the county later chose to lower its levy.

Commissioners said they plan to discuss inside millage and any potential rollback at an upcoming work session. The county auditor will check the relevant state code and timeline for final changes. No dollar amounts for the overall levy were provided during the discussion.

The motion to accept the amounts and rates was made during the Sept. 4 regular meeting and was seconded; the motion passed on a voice vote.
