The Lawrence County Board of Commissioners on July 22 voted to receive and sign a resolution to proceed with a developmental disabilities levy that would appear to county voters, county records show.
The action moves the levy campaign into an organizational phase; campaign organizers said the vote lets them begin public outreach and volunteer recruitment.
A representative for the levy campaign told commissioners, "We are having a kickoff event on August 1, which is a Friday evening from 6 to 8. ... We're going to have music and free food, and there will be information about the cost of the levy, tax for taxpayers." The representative said the auditor's office provided a sheet breaking down the levy cost to monthly amounts for taxpayers.
The campaign representative said outreach materials, volunteer sign-up opportunities and literature would be available at the event, which organizers plan to hold at the Southpointe Community Center and park shelter if weather requires it. The representative cited a campaign website (everyonedeservesachance.com) and a Facebook page named "Lawrence County Advocates for DD."
Commissioners recorded the motion to receive and sign the resolution and the meeting transcript records commissioners voting "Yes" during the roll call for that motion; no opposing votes were recorded in the minutes.
The county did not set an election date or levy rate during the meeting; staff said the auditor's office provided estimated taxpayer cost breakdowns that campaign organizers will use in public materials. No appropriation of county funds for the campaign occurred during the session.
