IDOT interstate work and Michigan City Road repairs to begin this summer, city engineer says

Calumet City’s public works and engineering staff told the council two major road projects will begin in coming months that will affect local traffic and access. City Engineer Matt said Michigan City Road will enter construction in August for bridge work with associated detours, and a larger Illinois Department of Transportation project on I‑94 from Martin Luther King Drive to River Oaks Drive is due to start around Labor Day and will take "a couple years," he said. "You’ll see some detours on Michigan City Road at I‑94 while they do some bridge work," Matt said. Matt characterized the I‑94 project as an IDOT-led interstate improvement that will have broad impacts across the city and region: "That project will be a couple years long. And… it’s an IDOT project. It’ll impact everyone in some way, shape, or form." The council did not take action on funding for these projects; Matt’s remarks described timing and expected disruption. Council members and the mayor urged residents to be patient and watch for detour signs, and said the city will provide information as schedules and traffic plans are finalized.
