Lucas County Juvenile Court presented and won approval Aug. 12 for four agreements aimed at programming and operations for court-involved youth.

Emily Simpson, representing juvenile court, described items 5 and 6 as grants with the Arts Commission of Greater Toledo to provide weekly art programming at the Community Treatment Center (CTC) and Youth Treatment Center (YTC). Agenda item 7 is an agreement with Toledo Bikes (Build-A-Bike) for a two-week hands-on program in which donated or community-donated bicycles are repaired by participating youth; youth who successfully complete the program may keep a repaired bike. Item 8 is an agreement with Aramark: the court’s kitchen will prepare meals for two outside facilities and Aramark will reimburse the court 35 cents per meal not used by the detention center or youth treatment center.

Commissioners asked clarifying questions about Build-A-Bike logistics, and Simpson said the shop receives community donations of bikes and that youth progress through phases that include repairing family or friends’ bikes. Commissioner Lopez indicated support and moved the items; the clerk recorded affirmative votes and the items were approved.

No funding amounts for the arts programming were stated on the public record at the meeting; the Aramark reimbursement rate (35 cents per meal) was specified on the agenda.

The juvenile court described the programs as part of its rehabilitative and skills-based offerings to court-involved youth.
