Smithville aldermen approve annexation of two Whispering Creek Farm parcels over resident objections

The Smithville Board of Aldermen voted 4-2 Tuesday to annex Lots 2 and 3 of Phase 1 of the Whispering Creek Farm development, a move opponents said is the first step in converting adjacent rural parcels to higher-density development.

The measure, moved by Alderman Mark Atkins and approved after a roll call vote, brings the two parcels into Smithville city limits despite repeated public comments from adjacent residents asking the board to reject the annexation or require more study.

The issue mattered to nearby homeowners because the annexation could clear the way for rezoning and subdivision later. “I feel the interest is more in collecting revenue than the quality of life,” said Nicole Path, a nearby resident, urging the board to post notice and allow more community dialogue. “This is the charm of living here. Quiet areas, stars to view, farmland, and nice neighbors.”
