Victoria County's emergency management staff told commissioners the county is in hurricane season and urged residents to use official channels such as Code Red and National Weather Service messaging to stay informed.
Rick, representing the Victoria Office of Emergency Management, opened by saying, “we are in the hurricane season, started June 1, runs through November.” He told the court that Category 3 hurricanes are the local threshold for major life‑safety and infrastructure concerns and warned that a single major storm can be devastating.
Rick reviewed improvements in forecasting and said the GOES‑16 satellite and newer forecasting software have narrowed the cone of uncertainty at the five‑day mark, improving planners' ability to decide whether to activate response operations. He noted the historic return rate for major storms is about once every 10 years and reminded the court the last direct Category 3 or stronger impact on the Victoria area was Hurricane Carla in 1961.
Officials urged residents to sign up for the county's Code Red alert system, follow the county's social channels and rely on the National Hurricane Center, NOAA and the National Weather Service in Corpus Christi for authoritative guidance. Rick also distributed a new annual hurricane preparedness guide and recommended families pick one preparedness topic and act on it.
The county judge and commissioners thanked emergency management staff for regional PIO coordination and emphasized that preexisting communications networks are critical to response. No formal action was taken.
