The Victoria County Commissioners Court recognized four local schools for participation in the Healthy South Texas program during the Aug. 25 meeting.
Marcy Cachara, health agent for Healthy South Texas with Texas A&M AgriLife Extension, introduced the program and said it "looks to educate staff, parents, students and help them encourage a healthy lifestyle." The court issued proclamations for Aloe Elementary, Patty Welder Middle School, STEM Middle School and Victoria East High School.
Why it matters: Healthy South Texas is a regional program that combines Texas A&M Health Science Center expertise with Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Services to promote nutrition, physical activity and disease prevention across a 27‑county region in South Texas, according to Marcy Cachara’s remarks.
Court action and remarks: Dr. Rusty Holt read the proclamations on behalf of the court and encouraged citizens to support the program. School representatives were invited forward to receive proclamations; the court noted this is the first recognition year for Aloe Elementary and the second for Patty Welder Middle School.
No formal funding or policy action was requested or taken; the item was ceremonial recognition and the court adjourned to other business after the presentations.
