At the Aug. 11 Callahan County Commissioners Court meeting, the Sheriff reported jail and contract-holding statistics and provided an overtime summary.
The Sheriff said the county jail was housing “4 males, no females,” while other facilities held additional inmates: “Coleman County has 9 males, 1 female. Taylor County has 1 male, 2 females. I also have 1 male at Perimeter Behavioral Hospital in Arlington... a total of 18. He's there for psych evaluation.”
The sheriff's overtime report for July 17–30 showed deputies at 0.75 overtime hours and dispatch at 37.75 hours, a figure the court described as “still too short in dispatch.” The Sheriff said hiring progress had been uneven but noted one hire from Abilene that might reduce shortfalls.
Why it matters: Jail populations and dispatch staffing affect public safety and county operational capacity; extended dispatch overtime may indicate understaffing or scheduling gaps.
The court accepted the sheriff's report by motion; Commissioner Farmer moved to accept and Commissioner Clark seconded. The court approved the report with all present concurring.
Ending: The Sheriff said one person was at Perimeter Behavioral Hospital for evaluation; no further action or policy directives were recorded in the meeting minutes regarding staffing changes.
