Callahan County commissioners on May 12 approved designating Garrett as the county’s IT point of contact and emergency management coordinator following the retirement of the prior employee.
The county judge explained that Garrett has been transitioning into the roles and already holds some FEMA‑required emergency management training; commissioners discussed the need for Garrett to understand public‑information limits, particularly for IT security information. A representative for the county’s IT vendor, Goldsmith Solutions, emphasized that the designee must know what is public record and what security‑sensitive information should be withheld. The judge and commissioners agreed Garrett should take an Open Meetings Act tutorial (available online) and consult the county attorney as needed.
Commissioner Winter moved to approve the designation with the understanding Garrett will take the Open Meetings Act tutorial; Commissioner McGowan seconded the motion and the court approved it by voice vote. The judge said stipends for the two positions were budgeted but did not provide a breakdown at the meeting.
