Miami County Road and Bridge staff on Aug. 27 recommended the Board approve an agreement with ALMI Enterprises for repairs to the salt-storage bunker at the county’s main shop, located at 320 Seventh Street.
Public works staff said ALMI submitted the low bid at $43,237. About $32,000 of the total is for a new cover; the remaining roughly $11,250 is for repairs to the existing structure. Road and Bridge explained the contractor will clean corroded areas, install patch kits where metal has deteriorated, and spray a protective truck‑bed‑liner product about eight feet up the bars that contact concrete to reduce future corrosion. Staff said ALMI holds a MoDOT contract and has success with the spray-liner approach; staff told commissioners they expected the repairs could extend the structure’s service life 20 years or more.
Road and Bridge said they received two other quotes: a local contractor that had higher pricing and less extensive repair work, and a contractor that did not complete an on-site inspection and whose quote covered only a new cover for about $36,000. Staff said the bunker is roughly 25 years old and shows corrosion and a damaged west end; separate garage-door repairs were being quoted and are a separate item. Commissioners asked whether insurance covered the repairs; staff said this was routine age-related deterioration and not an insurance claim.
What happens next: staff requested Board approval so the contractor may proceed; no formal vote was recorded during the study session. Road and Bridge said they will inspect other bunkers at remote shops (Hillsdale and Lewisburg) and bring future budget requests as needed.
