Seniors group seeks volunteer drivers; resident urges election outreach at parks and library

At the Wasilla City Council meeting on Aug. 25, members of the public urged the council and residents to help with senior services and to do more to advertise the city election. Tom Stearns, senior ambassador for Wasilla Area Seniors Inc. (WASI), said the organization is in “dire need of drivers” for Meals on Wheels and for transportation to medical appointments, and he listed upcoming senior events and deadlines for board applications.
Resident Tim Johnson urged the council to increase public awareness of the Oct. 7 municipal election. Johnson said many people he spoke to—particularly young parents who frequent city parks—were unaware of the election. He recommended posting large banners at two major parks and the library and proposed a council resolution to allow campaign signs to be displayed at city parks alongside election advertising to raise turnout.
Council received the public comments; no formal council action was taken during the meeting on either request. The city clerk noted election‑related activities, including a public meeting to test tabulators on Aug. 28 at 1 p.m. in chambers, open to the public.
